Overview

The short version of our privacy stance

Shalaye is a Chrome extension that helps users summarize, simplify, and understand web content. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use the extension.

The short version: Shalaye reads the text on the page you're viewing (only when you click "Summarize") and sends it to an AI API to generate a summary. Nothing is stored on our servers. Nothing is sold. Ever.

What Data We Access

Only when you explicitly trigger an action

Website content (page text) When you click "Summarize This Page" or use Quick Explain, the visible text of the current webpage is extracted and sent to the AI API to generate a summary.
Page title and URL Used to label saved summaries so you can identify them later. Stored locally in your browser only — never uploaded.
Theme preference (light/dark) Stored locally in your browser using Chrome Storage so your preference is remembered across sessions.
Saved summaries If you choose to save a summary, it is stored locally on your device using Chrome's built-in storage. We never upload saved summaries to any server.

What We Do NOT Collect

Hard limits we will never cross

Personal identity informationNo names, emails, addresses, ages, or identification numbers are collected.
Browsing historyWe do not track which websites you visit or build any browsing profile.
Location dataNo GPS coordinates, region, or IP address information is collected.
Financial or health dataWe never collect payment information, medical records, or any sensitive personal data.
Keystrokes or mouse activityNo keylogging, click tracking, scroll monitoring, or screen recording of any kind.
Server-side storageWe have no backend server. There is no database storing your information anywhere.

AI API Usage

Third-party services used for summarization

To generate summaries and explanations, Shalaye sends the text content of the page you are currently viewing to the following AI services:

Primary
Google Gemini API

Page text is sent to Google's Gemini 2.0 Flash API for processing. Governed by Google's Privacy Policy and Generative AI Terms.

Fallback
Groq API (Llama 3.3 70B)

If the primary API is unavailable, page text may be sent to Groq's API as a backup. Governed by Groq's Privacy Policy.

Important: Do not use the Summarize feature on pages containing sensitive personal information (passwords, medical records, financial data), as that text would be sent to a third-party AI service for processing.

Local Storage Only

Your data stays on your device

Any data that Shalaye stores (saved summaries, your theme preference) is kept exclusively on your own device using Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.local API. This data:

Never leaves your device · Not accessible to us or any third party · Can be deleted anytime by removing the extension
